about the album

Murder at the Gates is a bold new musical from Steven Sater, the Tony and GRAMMY®-winning writer of Spring Awakening, and James Bourne, the chart-topping songwriter and founding member of Busted. Bringing together two distinctly different musical backgrounds, Sater and Bourne have created an electrifying, genre-defying score that pushes contemporary musical theatre into new territory.

Built around an explosive fusion of pop, rock, jazz, and musical theater, the music of Murder at the Gates moves from haunting ballads to hilarious uptempos to full-throttle rock anthems, coming together to form a dynamic score that is as irreverent as it is haunting and visceral. In the studio concept album for this black-comic, murder-mystery musical, Sater’s signature incisive and poetic lyricism meets Bourne’s instinct for immediate, hook-driven pop songwriting, resulting in songs that function both as clues to the murder-mystery puzzle, and as compelling standalone pop-rock songs that are ready for radio.

This album marks the first collaboration of Steven Sater and James Bourne. James Bourne is a multi-Platinum, multi-award-winning songwriter, musician, and founding member of Busted. With Busted, he has sold more than five million records, achieved four UK No. 1 singles, and won two BRIT Awards, including Best British Breakthrough Act and Best Pop Act. As a songwriter, Bourne has written seven UK No. 1 singles, including McFly’s “5 Colours in Her Hair” and “Obviously,” and has written for artists including the Jonas Brothers, PinkPantheress, Backstreet Boys, 5 Seconds of Summer, The Saturdays, and The Vamps. He has also written six original musicals, including Loserville, which received an Olivier Award nomination for Best New Musical in the West End.

Sater is a Tony, Olivier, and GRAMMY® Award-winning writer and lyricist best known for Spring Awakening, which won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the GRAMMY® Award for Best Musical Theater Album. He subsequently collaborated with legendary composer Burt Bacharach on Some Lovers, an original musical whose world-premiere recording was nominated for a GRAMMY® for Best Musical Theater Album.

As a new, unproduced musical, the Murder at the Gates concept album is working outside of traditional producing pathways to forge new roads for musical theater artists to get their music to young audiences who are hungry for new, daring work. The album’s independent production reflects an increasingly collaborative approach to musical theatre, with a growing community of performers and fans helping bring the music to life beyond the traditional development process. The result is a recording that feels simultaneously rooted in traditional musical theatre history and connected to the sound and energy of contemporary popular music.
